Stele “City of Military Glory”, Military memorial column in Pervomaisk district, Rostov-on-Don, Russia.
The Stele City of Military Glory is a granite and bronze monument standing in the Square of Military Glory in the Pervomaisk district of Rostov-on-Don. It consists of a round central column topped with the Russian state emblem and four square pillars arranged around it, each decorated with bronze reliefs.
Rostov-on-Don received the title City of Military Glory in 2008, following a petition from city officials and veterans who wanted the city's wartime role to be formally recognized. The monument was built after that recognition, serving as a permanent marker of the presidential decree.
The four square pillars carry bronze reliefs showing scenes from the city's defense in World War II. Soldiers and civilians appear side by side, reflecting how the fighting involved the whole population.
The monument stands in an open square near the airport, making it easy to walk around and view from all sides. The inscriptions at the base, including the text of the presidential decree, are easy to read.
Although the monument follows an official format repeated in other Russian cities that hold the same title, the artistic work here was made by a local team from Rostov. Architects Y. Dvornikov and A. Musienko worked alongside sculptors Sergei Oleshnya, G. Myasnikov, and A. Dementiev.
