Kobyakovo Settlement
Kobyakovo Settlement, Archaeological site in Rostov Oblast, Russia
Kobyakovo Settlement is an archaeological site near Rostov-on-Don featuring multiple overlapping layers of ancient dwellings and earthen fortifications. The elevated location preserves remains of clay houses, defensive walls, and refuse pits that span several centuries of continuous occupation.
The site was first established around the 12th century BCE by tribes migrating from the Kuban region. Successive waves of different peoples reoccupied and rebuilt the settlement over the following centuries until abandonment.
This settlement served as a meeting place where different peoples conducted trade and cultural exchanges through connected networks. Daily life left marks in pottery and tools that visitors can recognize in the excavated remains.
The site sits outside Rostov-on-Don and can be reached via marked paths from the city. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring sun protection, as the terrain is open and uneven in places.
The settlement displays irregular patterns and makeshift construction that reflect the semi-nomadic lifestyle of its inhabitants. This approach to building and planning stands apart from the organized urban designs of more settled civilizations.
