Камышинские горы Уши и Лоб, Natural monument in Kamyshin district, Russia
Kamyshinskie Ushi and Lob are two hills in the steppe that rise approximately 30-40 meters above the surrounding flat terrain. They form distinctive landforms in this otherwise level landscape.
In the mid-19th century, a geologist studied these hills and discovered fossil remains there. The finds revealed that this area was once covered by subtropical vegetation.
Local legends tell of these mountains serving as a base for bandits associated with the famous ataman Stepan Razin during historical periods.
The protected area is freely accessible, but the harsh steppe environment requires appropriate clothing and preparation. There is little shade or water nearby, so visitors should bring adequate supplies and allow enough time.
These hills are remarkable in the region because they are the only visible rock formations in the otherwise sandy steppe. Below the surface lie plant remains millions of years old that tell of a completely different climate.
