Shalakhovskoye Vodokhranilishche, reservoir in Russia
Shalakhovskoye Vodokhranilishche is a large reservoir in eastern Moscow region stretching along the Tsna River floodplain and covering more than 500 hectares. The water is held by two dams that divide it into three sections, creating a landscape of thick forests, wetlands, and multiple river inflows that feed the basin.
The reservoir was created from former floodmeadows that were part of the river's natural flooding cycle. Over time it became an important water resource for agriculture and irrigation, supporting farming across the local area.
The village of Shalakhovo on the northern shore is known for its grey heron colony nesting in the trees above the water. Local residents have maintained traditional ways of life such as fishing and bird watching, with the water playing a central role in their daily activities.
Visitors reach the reservoir easily from Yegoryevsk town via the main highway and find paths along the shores for exploration. Access to the water sometimes requires crossing swampy ditches, but the effort rewards you with peaceful spots and open views.
The reservoir is home to a remarkable grey heron colony that nests regularly in the trees on the northern shore, especially visible in May during nest building. Nearby sits a large fish farming pond system covering around 850 hectares where carp and other fish grow unusually large.
