Alexandrov Kremlin, Medieval fortress complex in Alexandrov, Russia
The Alexandrov Kremlin is a fortified complex in Alexandrov, Russia, made up of churches, towers, and walls built from white stone and red brick. The buildings date from different periods and together form an enclosed compound surrounded by defensive walls.
Between 1564 and 1581, the complex served as the personal residence of Ivan the Terrible and acted as the political center of Russia during that time. That period shaped much of what the site looks like today, from the layout of buildings to their decoration.
The Trinity Cathedral inside the kremlin holds frescoes and stone carvings from the 16th century that visitors can still see today. The religious imagery on the walls shows how medieval craftsmen decorated sacred spaces using traditional methods.
The site functions as both a museum and an active monastery, so some areas may be closed to visitors at certain times. The ground between buildings is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear makes walking around much easier.
The kremlin holds two sets of medieval bronze gates, one from Novgorod dating to 1336 and one from Tver from the 14th century. Both were originally made for other cities and brought here at a later point, which makes their presence in the same place unusual.
