Jönköping, Urban settlement in Småland, Sweden
Jönköping is a city in Småland on the southern shore of Lake Vättern at 104 meters elevation. Forest and smaller lakes surround the built-up areas, while the large lake forms the northern boundary.
King Magnus Ladulås granted the settlement its first city charter in 1284, making it a trading post between Östergötland and Västergötland. Safety match production began in 1845 and shaped the economy until 1970.
The Match Museum displays factory equipment and workshops from the time when the city produced most of Europe's safety matches. Visitors walk through rooms filled with machinery that once employed thousands of workers in this single industry.
The Elmia exhibition center hosts large public events such as DreamHack and draws visitors throughout the year. The city center lies close to the lakeshore and is easy to explore on foot.
The city merges with neighboring Huskvarna to form a single metropolitan area. This connection has created the administrative seat of Jönköping County.
