Karlstad, Administrative center in Värmland County, Sweden
Karlstad is a settlement at the mouth of the Klarälven river where it flows into Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden. The urban area extends across several islands and peninsulas, with bridges connecting the different parts.
The town received its charter in 1584 from Duke Charles, who later became King Charles IX and gave it his name. After a major fire in 1865, the center was rebuilt following a new plan with wide streets.
Residents spend time in Almen Park near the river and on the wide paths used for walking and cycling. The town is known by the nickname Solstaden, meaning sun city, because of its relatively sunny climate.
Most facilities are within walking distance of each other in the compact center that runs along the riverfront. Cycling paths run through the town and along the waterways, connecting different neighborhoods.
The town hosts one of the country's main inland ports on the shore of Vänern. Near the center there is also a large telecommunications facility that manages networks across several countries.
