Karlskrona, Naval city in Blekinge County, Sweden
Karlskrona is a town in Blekinge County spread across several islands by the sea. Its main districts sit on Trossö and neighboring islands, linked by bridges and a flat topography.
Founded in 1680 under Charles XI to create an ice-free naval harbor in the south. Shipyards, arsenals and fortifications rose in the following decades, shaping the town.
Street names and buildings throughout the center recall the era when Sweden was a leading sea power. The naval tradition continues, and some harbor areas remain off-limits to the public.
Ferries from Poland and trains from other Swedish cities offer regular connections. Most museums and sites are reachable on foot or by local bus.
The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage property since 1998, even though the naval base remains in operation. Some historic facilities still serve their original purpose.
