Bollnäs is a town and municipality in Gävleborg County in central Sweden, situated along the Ljusnan River. It sits at the heart of a largely forested and rural area, with older buildings spread through the town center and open countryside beginning just at the edge of the built-up area.
Bollnäs is one of the oldest settlements in the Hälsingland region, with a church built around the year 1200. Over the following centuries, the town grew as a regional center, shaped by the timber trade and the Ljusnan River that runs through it.
The Bollnäs Jazz Festival has been held every year since 1977, making it one of the oldest jazz events in Sweden. During the festival, musicians and visitors fill the town and the event brings a very different energy to everyday life here.
Bollnäs is easy to reach from larger Swedish cities and works well as a base for exploring Gävleborg County. The river and forests start right at the edge of town, so walking along the water or into the woods requires very little planning.
The traditional farmhouses of the Hälsingland region near Bollnäs are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, recognized for their elaborate painted interiors. These decorations were created specifically for weddings and celebrations, which makes them different from most other historic rural buildings in Sweden.
