Gränna, Historic coastal town in Jönköping Municipality, Sweden
Gränna is a coastal town on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern featuring traditional wooden houses with white and red facades along cobblestone streets. The town spreads along the waterfront with small shops and buildings that follow a linear layout beside the lake.
Count Per Brahe founded the town in 1652 as a trading post on the lake. It grew into a prosperous settlement that became known across the region for commerce and later for its candy production.
The town is known for its striped peppermint candies, which you can see being made in small shops throughout the streets. These sweets have become so linked to the place that they define much of what people come here to experience.
The town is easily accessible by bus and compact enough to explore on foot along the waterfront streets. Most visitors park near the center and walk through the main pedestrian areas where shops and attractions are gathered.
A widow named Amalia Eriksson created the famous red and white striped peppermint candy in 1859 in her home. This simple invention became the symbol of the town and is still made by hand in shops throughout the streets today.
