Dalarna, Historical province in central Sweden
Dalarna is a historical province in central Sweden extending from the Norwegian border to the Gulf of Bothnia. The landscape shifts from mountain ranges in the north to forested flatlands in the south.
The province played a key role in Swedish independence through two uprisings: one in 1434 and another in 1521 against Danish rule. These events are remembered and celebrated throughout the country today.
The name comes from an Old Norse word meaning river valley. Bright orange-red wooden horses are commonly seen in workshops and markets throughout the province, representing a traditional local craft.
Most villages are connected by train or regional bus services, with Falun in the center linking to neighboring towns. Winter visitors need warm clothing and sturdy footwear, while summer visitors should pack lighter layers and sun protection.
The Vasaloppet is a cross-country ski race covering about 90 kilometers, making it the longest race of its kind worldwide. Tens of thousands of skiers compete annually along this historic route.
