Årsta Castle, Baroque castle in Haninge Municipality, Sweden.
Årsta Castle is a Baroque manor house in Haninge Municipality, south of Stockholm, built on elevated ground overlooking the surrounding landscape. The main building is flanked by four corner pavilions and follows a symmetrical plan that gives the whole structure a formal, ordered appearance.
The site was first recorded in the early 14th century, when it served as an administrative center for the Teutonic Order in Sweden. The current building was erected in the 17th century, replacing the earlier structures that had stood on the same ground.
Årsta Castle is used today as a restaurant and event venue, which gives the building an active role rather than that of a purely passive monument. Visitors who come for a meal or an event get a close look at the four corner pavilions and the symmetrical facade from the courtyard.
Because the castle operates as a restaurant and event venue, it is worth checking in advance whether it is open to visitors on a given day. The grounds around the building are generally accessible for a walk and offer a good view of the exterior.
The architect Erik Dahlbergh incorporated medieval foundations from earlier buildings into the 17th-century design rather than clearing the site completely. This decision preserved traces of the site's earlier life directly beneath the Baroque structure that stands today.
