Styresholm, Medieval fortress ruins in Kramfors, Sweden.
Styresholm is a fortress ruin on the banks of the Ångermanälven river in Kramfors, dating from a period when water levels were significantly higher. The remains show stone structures and earthen mounds that mark where this defensive stronghold once stood.
The fortress was founded in the late 14th century by the Victualling Brothers, who controlled important trade networks in the Baltic Sea. A century later, control of the site shifted as new political powers gained influence in the region.
The Styresholm Project, in partnership with Hola Folk High School, conducts regular archaeological excavations to uncover artifacts and evidence of medieval conflicts.
The ruins are easily reached from the parking area near Hola Folk High School, where information panels about the site are also located. The place is open to visit and there are no special requirements to explore it.
During autumn months, the castle mounds turn red with lingonberries while migratory birds gather along the river, creating a seasonal natural display.
