Överkalix Municipality

Överkalix Municipality is an administrative area in Norrbotten County that stretches along the Kalix River, featuring dense coniferous forests, two waterfalls called Jockfall and Linafall, and four urban settlements. The landscape is shaped by water courses and woodland that define the character of the region.

The area took its current shape after territorial changes in 1870, when a section was separated to establish Korpilombolo. That territory eventually became incorporated into present-day Pajala Municipality.

The local dialect known as överkalixmål is a distinct form of speech that sounds noticeably different from standard Swedish, reflecting the isolated history of the area.

The E10 highway provides the main road connection to larger centers, with Luleå about 100 kilometers to the south serving as a key transportation hub. Getting around the region depends on having access to this primary route.

A research study examined 303 people born in this area between 1890 and 1920, using historical records to study how environmental conditions affect biological traits passed between generations. This investigation revealed important insights into how external factors shape inherited biology across families.
