Aavasaksa, Mountain and archaeological site in Ylitornio, Finland.

Aavasaksa is a sharp-edged mountain that rises 242 meters above sea level and is topped by an observation tower. From the summit, you can look across the border between Finland and Sweden and see both countries separated by the natural landscape.

Between 1736 and 1737, French scientist Pierre Louis Maupertuis chose this location for measurements to determine Earth's shape. These measurements were part of a major scientific expedition that changed how people understood our planet.

The Imperial Lodge on the summit was built for a planned Russian imperial visit and reflects the historical ties between Finland and Russia. Visitors can see how this structure represents a moment of diplomatic importance that shaped the region.

The climb to the summit follows the Aavasaksanvaarantie hiking trail, allowing you to experience the landscape as you ascend. About 675 meters northwest of the top, you will find the Kota mountain hut where you can rest and take shelter.

It is the southernmost point in Finland from which you can watch the midnight sun during summer solstice. This phenomenon is a special experience for visitors in northern Europe, possible only at a few locations.
