Kattilakoski

Kattilakoski is a waterfall complex with multiple rapids along the Torne River, creating a dynamic water landscape with pools and cascades. This formation extends over a considerable stretch and shows the power of the river as it shapes the land.

The Torne River and its rapids served as a vital trade route and power source for early settlements in the region. The waterway shaped economic development of northern communities across centuries.

The annual log rafting competition in July brings together participants at Kattilakoski to demonstrate traditional river navigation techniques and skills.

You can visit the rapids from both the Swedish and Finnish banks of the river, with multiple informal access points available. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and watch for slippery rocks along the shores.

During summer months, traditional Finnish lean-to structures called laavu provide resting spots for observers to watch the powerful water flow.
