The open-air museum Old Linköping, Open-air museum in Linköping, Sweden
Old Linköping is an open-air museum consisting of around 100 historical buildings arranged along cobblestone streets, recreating a complete Swedish town from the 19th century. The collection includes residences, workshops, shops, and other structures that show the layout and appearance of a traditional settlement.
In the 1940s, numerous buildings were relocated to this site to save them from demolition during Linköping's modernization period. This rescue effort made it possible to preserve an entire 19th-century settlement for future generations.
Craftspeople such as blacksmiths and carpenters demonstrate their skills daily in the workshops, showing how people worked during the 19th century. Visitors can watch these traditional techniques firsthand and gain a direct sense of how trades were practiced in that era.
The site is freely accessible throughout the year, and visitors can walk around at their own pace to explore the buildings. From June through mid-August, extended hours and extra activities like craft demonstrations are available.
About 30 historical houses on the grounds are actual residences that people still live in today. This active neighborhood gives the museum an authentic feel and shows how such a place truly functions.
