Ala Church

The stone church features two separate levels of medieval murals on its walls, with the oldest ones depicting legendary animals from the 13th century.

The original nave construction dates to the 12th century, while the choir section was added during the mid-13th century to replace a smaller predecessor.

The church contains stone sculptures at its southern portals and preserves a medieval baptismal font made from local limestone that survived a fire in 1938.

The church remains active within the Church of Sweden under the Diocese of Visby, offering regular services and maintaining its religious functions.

The church walls display ancient ship carvings in its tower, representing maritime connections and medieval craftsmanship of the Gotland region.
