Torsburgen, Prehistoric hillfort in Gotland, Sweden.
The limestone fortress spans 1.2 square kilometers with cliffs rising up to 25 meters on three sides and a two-kilometer defensive wall on the southern edge.
Archaeological studies from the 1970s determined that the initial construction began around the first century, with expansions continuing through the ninth century.
The fortress appears in the Guta Saga, which describes how a third of Gotland's population temporarily lived at Torsburgen during a period of overcrowding.
Visitors can explore the site through a four-kilometer marked circular trail accessible from two parking areas located at the northern and southern sections.
The 1992 forest fire transformed the landscape, revealing geological formations and creating conditions for rare plant species such as wild oregano and native orchids.
