Torsburgen

Torsburgen is a prehistoric hillfort on Gotland that spans a large area with steep limestone cliffs and a defensive wall built across open terrain. The site combines natural rock formations and human-made structures that created a fortified settlement.

The first structures at this site date to around the first century, with major building phases continuing through the medieval period. Archaeological work reveals how people expanded and adapted the fortifications over many generations to meet changing needs.

The fortress appears in the Guta Saga, which describes how part of Gotland's population temporarily lived at Torsburgen during a crowded period in medieval times. This story shows the site's role as a refuge and gathering place for islanders facing pressure on their land.

A marked circular walking trail guides visitors through the site with access from two parking areas at different sections. The path is well-marked and fairly easy to follow on your own.

A forest fire in 1992 transformed the landscape by exposing previously hidden rock formations and geological features. This change created ideal conditions for rare plants that thrive in open, sun-filled areas to take root.
