Gammelgarn Church, Medieval church in Gammelgarn District, Sweden.

Gammelgarn Church is a stone building with a single central column supporting four vaults in the nave, while three Gothic windows on the eastern side allow light to enter the space. The structure shows the typical medieval building style with thick walls and clear geometric design.

The church building dates from the 14th century, while an earlier defensive tower from the 12th century was incorporated into its structure. This older tower shows how communities needed fortified buildings for protection against raiders from the Baltic region.

The carved southern doorway shows scenes that tell stories from ancient texts, created by skilled stone workers who left their mark on the building. These sculptures reflect how people of that time understood and expressed their faith through art.

The building is open for visitors and offers parking facilities nearby for those arriving by car. Guided visits can be arranged through the Diocese of Visby, providing a deeper insight into the place and its story.

A medieval gravestone with ancient inscriptions is set into the choir floor, connecting visitors to people who lived long ago. This visible link to the past makes the age and lasting importance of this sacred place feel real and tangible.
