Mellerud–Arvika railway, Railway line in Bengtsfors Municipality, Sweden.
The Mellerud-Arvika railway is a railway line that runs about 163 kilometers through Dalsland and Värmland, connecting 13 stations and 14 loading points along the way. The track passes through forested countryside with small settlements and runs partly alongside the Dalsland Canal.
Construction began in 1914, with different sections opening between 1923 and 1928, delayed by economic problems after World War One. It was built to move timber, metals, and other raw materials from the forested regions to processing factories.
The railway was built to connect remote settlements and transport goods from local industries across two regions. Today visitors can see how the line passes through small villages and forests, showing how rail transport shaped the way people in this area worked and traded with each other.
Summer tourist trains run on the line using Y7 railcars, operated by the foundation Dal-Västra Värmlands Järnväg which maintains the Billingsfors to Bengtsfors section. Since the route passes through remote forested areas with few settlements, it is worth checking departure times in advance.
The railway runs alongside the Dalsland Canal, allowing visitors to combine train travel with boat trips on this historic waterway. Many travelers do not realize they can experience both forms of transport during a single visit.
