Lojsta Castle, Medieval fortress ruins near Stånga, Sweden
The stone foundations of Lojsta Castle stand between Slottsträsk and Broträsk lakes, surrounded by a moat that measures 100 meters in length.
During the Middle Ages, pirates known as Vitalians controlled this fortress until 1404 when the Teutonic Knights forced them to surrender the stronghold.
The archaeological excavations at Lojsta Castle in the early 1900s revealed the structure's layout and provided insights into medieval Swedish defensive architecture.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins by land and observe the remains of the drawbridge that once connected the fortress to the mainland.
The water level of the surrounding lakes has decreased by 2.5 meters since medieval times, dividing what was once a single lake into three smaller bodies.
