Fardhem Church, Medieval church in Gotland Municipality, Sweden

Fardhem Church is a stone building in Romanesque style located in Gotland Municipality, featuring thick walls, rounded arches, and a tall tower added in the late 1200s. The structure houses a baptismal font pedestal from the 1100s, which is the oldest piece of furniture inside.

Construction began in the 1100s and replaced an earlier wooden church that served the community. A tall tower was added about 150 years later to make the building more visible and prominent in the landscape.

Inside, visitors can see wall paintings from the 1400s that were discovered during restoration work in the early 1950s. These murals show the artistic choices that shaped the space over centuries.

The church is accessible to visitors year-round in its location on Gotland. Keep in mind that opening times may vary depending on services or local events, so it helps to check ahead before planning your visit.

The baptismal font pedestal actually comes from the 1100s and is the only surviving furniture piece from the church's earliest period. Its age makes it a rare surviving example of Romanesque church furnishings from that era.
