Alvastra Abbey

Alvastra Abbey is a medieval Cistercian monastery in ruins, set within the Swedish landscape with stone walls and architectural elements indicating monastic life. The remains reveal how the complex was structured and expanded over generations.

The monastery was founded in 1143 by French monks from Clairvaux Abbey after King Sverker I donated land, with the church consecrated in 1185. This establishment brought Cistercian principles and building traditions to Swedish soil.
