Alvastra Abbey, Medieval Cistercian monastery ruins in Västra Tollstad, Sweden.
Stone walls and architectural elements of the former monastery stand against the Swedish countryside, displaying medieval construction techniques and design patterns.
French monks from Clairvaux Abbey established Alvastra monastery in 1143 on land donated by King Sverker I of Sweden and inaugurated the church in 1185.
Several Swedish monarchs, including Kings Sverker I, Carl I, and John I, along with their queens, were buried within the monastery grounds during its active period.
The archaeological site remains open throughout the year with no entrance fee, and visitors can access basic facilities including restrooms near the ruins.
Saint Bridget of Sweden spent time at Alvastra Abbey, where she received religious visions that later influenced her path toward canonization.
