Varnhem Abbey, Cistercian monastery ruins in Varnhem, Sweden.
The monastery complex includes preserved stone foundations, medieval building remains, and a fully restored abbey church with gothic arches and vaults.
Founded in 1148 by monks from Alvastra, the monastery became a center of power until a fire in 1234 required extensive rebuilding.
The monastery church contains the burial sites of medieval Swedish royalty, including Birger Jarl and four kings from different dynasties.
Visitors can explore the monastery ruins, museum, herb garden, and lake area, with guided tours available throughout the tourist season.
Archaeological findings beneath the monastery revealed a stone church from 1040, making it the oldest documented stone church in mainland Sweden.
