Mellerud Municipality, Municipality in Västra Götaland County, Sweden
Mellerud Municipality is an administrative area in Västra Götaland covering several towns and villages spread across gently rolling terrain. Lake Vänern borders the western side and numerous smaller waterways run through the landscape, while forests and fields make up most of the area.
This administrative area took shape in 1969 when a market town merged with several surrounding regions into one unified municipality. The combination brought together communities with different origins, creating a larger unit better suited to managing services and development together.
The area developed around timber industries and water power, with historic mill buildings still standing in several villages. These old industrial sites shape the landscape and show how work and settlement patterns evolved here over generations.
The main service centers are distributed across Mellerud and several outlying villages, making it practical to visit multiple locations in one day. Walking and driving are both reasonable ways to get around, depending on which areas you want to explore.
The Håverud Aqueduct carries boats across a challenging stretch of the Dalsland Canal, showcasing early 20th century engineering ingenuity. This remarkable structure was built to solve a difficult terrain problem and remains one of Sweden's most distinctive canal features.
