Tomarps Kungsgård Castle, Renaissance castle in Åstorp Municipality, Sweden
Tomarps Kungsgård is a Renaissance castle in Åstorp Municipality with four two-story wings built from traditional materials arranged around a rectangular courtyard. The structures form a protected governmental complex notable for their typical Nordic Renaissance architecture and construction quality.
The castle was built in the late 15th century by the Brosterup family and passed to Swedish royal ownership after 1660. It then served for several centuries as a royal estate and retained its importance as an administrative center.
The north wing shows traces of medieval construction and documents how Swedish building techniques evolved from medieval times to the Renaissance. These layers of different periods remain visible today and tell the story of how craftspeople changed their methods over centuries.
The estate is managed by the Swedish National Property Board and is open to visitors interested in exploring the Renaissance architecture and historical spaces. It is advisable to check opening times in advance since it is a protected historical site.
After passing to royal control in the 17th century, officers of the Skånska Husarregement used the compound as their quarters. This military connection shaped the building for several generations and left traces in the room layouts and fixtures.
