Harsprånget hydroelectric power station, Hydroelectric power station in Jokkmokk Municipality, Sweden
Harsprånget is a hydroelectric power station on the Lule River in northern Sweden, featuring a rock-fill dam that is 50 meters high and spans 1,400 meters. The facility creates a large reservoir and uses the water's drop to generate electricity.
Construction began in 1918 but stopped in 1921 due to economic difficulties, then resumed in 1945 at a new location downstream from the original plan. The relocation became necessary as conditions changed.
The name comes from Swedish words meaning Hare Run, referencing the natural rapids that once twisted and turned like the quick movements of a fleeing animal.
The location sits near Jokkmokk in northern Sweden and is accessible by car. Visitors should note that the region experiences heavy snow during winter months and requires proper preparation for travel.
The station houses Sweden's largest single hydropower turbine, nicknamed Gigantic Gerhard, which alone produces roughly half of the facility's total power output. This turbine represents a remarkable engineering achievement from its era.
