Barnhusbron, Access road and bicycle bridge in Kungsholmen, Sweden
Barnhusbron is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge connecting Kungsholmen and Norrmalm across Barnhusviken bay. It was built using two prestressed concrete box girders and provides a direct link between these central Stockholm neighborhoods.
The bridge opened in 1969 as part of Stockholm's efforts to improve connections between central neighborhoods. Its design using prestressed concrete was a modern engineering solution for the time.
The name Barnhusbron means Orphanage Bridge, honoring a social institution that once served the Stockholm area. Today people cross it daily as a normal part of moving between Kungsholmen and Norrmalm.
The bridge connects Scheelegatan on Kungsholmen with Tegnérgatan on Norrmalm and is used by both cyclists and pedestrians. During rush hours it can be quite crowded, so travel times vary depending on the time of day.
The bridge contains utility ducts running beneath its surface that carry services for both neighborhoods. This design approach makes efficient use of space in this densely built area of the city.
