Ankarvattnet, Freshwater lake in Strömsund Municipality, Jämtland County, Sweden
Ankarvattnet is a freshwater lake in Strömsund Municipality located at 448 meters above sea level in Jämtland County. The lake covers 9 square kilometers and reaches depths of 44 meters in its deepest areas.
The lake formed following the retreat of glaciers during the Quaternary period thousands of years ago. This glacial activity fundamentally shaped the landscape that defines the Jämtland region today.
The Southern Sami people have their own name for this water body, Åanghkerenjaevrie, reflecting their deep connection to the region. This naming tradition shows how local communities have understood and related to the landscape for generations.
The lake sits in a remote area of Jämtland and offers fishing opportunities throughout different seasons. The clear water and lack of development along the shores make it an accessible destination for nature-based activities.
The lake remains relatively unknown despite its size and is often overlooked by visitors to the region. This allows the aquatic life and surrounding ecosystem to thrive with minimal human interference.
