Toppeladugård Castle, Renaissance castle in Genarp, Sweden
Toppeladugård is a stately home in Genarp, in southern Sweden, built around a symmetrical two-story main building with wings on each side. A garden and parkland surround the property, separating it from the surrounding countryside.
Christina Piper acquired the property in 1720 and turned a working farm into a manor with a formal garden in the Baroque style. The original three-story building fell into disrepair over the following centuries, leading to its eventual replacement.
The name Toppeladugård comes from the Swedish word for farm yard, pointing to the working agricultural roots of the estate. Visitors passing by today see a symmetrical manor whose facade and flanking wings give it the look of a formal country residence.
The estate is a private residence and is not generally open to visitors, so anyone hoping to see the grounds should reach out to the owners in advance. The building and the outline of the garden can be seen from the road without entering the property.
Although the current building was completed around 1920, it was not built in a modern style of that time but instead drew from older architectural references. This choice to look backward rather than forward was unusual for a construction project of that period in Sweden.
