Slottsskogsvallen, Sports field in Slottsskogen, Sweden
Slottsskogsvallen is a sports and athletics facility in the Slottsskogen area of Gothenburg, Sweden, with a football stadium, an athletics track, and a mountain bike course. The site covers several distinct areas, each set up for a different type of sport, from competitive matches to everyday training.
The venue opened in 1923 and gained international attention in 1926 when it hosted the second Women's World Games, an event that put female athletes in the spotlight at a time when women's sport had little visibility. That edition drew competitors from many countries and placed the venue on the map of world sport.
Slottsskogsvallen is the finish line for Göteborgsvarvet, a half marathon that draws tens of thousands of runners to Gothenburg every spring. Around race day, the whole area fills with spectators and supporters, giving the grounds a very different feel from its usual training pace.
The grounds sit inside Slottsskogen park and are easy to reach on foot or by bike from the city center. Access to some areas can change depending on the season or ongoing events, so it is worth checking before you arrive.
The Swedish runner Gunder Hägg set multiple world records here in 1942, launching a career that made him one of the best middle-distance athletes of his time. Few venues in the world have seen that number of records broken in such a short span.
