Rånäs Manor, Manor house in Norrtälje Municipality, Sweden
Rånäs Manor is a manor house on the northern shore of Lake Skedviken with roots in the 17th century and neoclassical architecture from the 19th century. The estate comprises a main building, outbuildings, formal gardens, and grounds that spread across the property.
An earlier manor building stood here in the 17th century, but was replaced in the 1850s with a new structure commissioned by the Reuterskiöld family. The new buildings were meant to establish the estate as a center for iron processing and regional commerce.
The name references nearby iron ore deposits that shaped the economic life of the region for generations. Visitors can still sense this industrial heritage in the layout of the gardens and buildings.
The estate today functions as a hotel and conference center, offering guests rooms, dining options, and wellness amenities. Its location near Stockholm makes it easy to reach, and the surrounding area provides walking and outdoor activities around the lake and forests.
From 1932 to 1985, the manor served as a psychiatric hospital for Stockholm before being converted into a hospitality venue. This dramatically different use meant that many original rooms were reconfigured, but the building layout and architecture still reflect this unexpected chapter in the estate's history.
