Allmänna Barnhuset, Historical child welfare institution in Stockholm, Sweden.
The building on Norrtullsgatan represents early Swedish social welfare architecture with its rectangular structure and symmetrical window arrangement.
Founded in 1633 as Stora Barnhuset, the institution moved to this location in 1885 and operated until 1922 as a home for orphans and children in need.
The institution established fundamental principles for child welfare in Sweden by providing education and vocational training to disadvantaged children.
The foundation continues to support child welfare initiatives through research, educational programs, and the annual Stora Priset award ceremony.
In 1647, a group of children from the institution directly petitioned Queen Christina to report their living conditions, leading to institutional reforms.
