Statue of Poseidon

The Statue of Poseidon is a bronze sculpture positioned on a snail-shaped elevation within a fountain at the end of Avenyn boulevard. The figure stands approximately 7 meters tall and is surrounded by water features and decorative marine elements.

The sculpture was installed in 1931 as part of Gothenburg's 300th-anniversary celebrations. This followed the construction of a temporary wooden fountain built in 1923 that previewed the project.

The bronze figure of Poseidon by Carl Milles marks the entrance to Götaplatsen, where concert hall, art museum, and city theatre converge. It represents Gothenburg's deep connection to the sea and maritime heritage that has shaped the city for centuries.

The location is accessible via wheelchair-friendly paths and remains visible year-round in the square. Water features in the fountain operate during warmer months and create a refreshing focal point.

The statue holds a water-spraying fish in its right hand while its left hand cradles a snail. A stylized mussel adorns the figure's head as a crown-like element.
