Näckrosdammen

Näckrosdammen is a pond in Renströmsparken, situated behind the Art Museum at Götaplatsen, with water lilies floating on its surface and weeping willows lining the edges. The surrounding grounds contain rhododendron bushes and open green spaces that give the water a sheltered feel.

The pond and park were created in 1923 for the Gothenburg Jubilee Exhibition, an important civic event that shaped the area. The design from that period has been maintained and continues to serve the city.

A bronze statue called 'When the Bond of Friendship Tied' has stood near the water since 1955, marking the friendship between Gothenburg and Turku. It gives the place a sense of international connection that you notice as you walk around the pond.

The pond is accessible year-round for walking and exploring the park grounds on foot. When winter temperatures drop sufficiently, the water freezes naturally and becomes suitable for ice skating.

The Humanisten university building stands next to the water and operates a cafeteria during the academic year that welcomes visitors. This blends the pond area into student life, giving it an animated feeling at certain times.
