Blacksås, Nature reserve in Hudiksvall Municipality, Sweden.
Blacksås is a nature reserve in Hudiksvall with a dramatic eastern cliff that rises 270 meters above the lake below, featuring steep rock faces and thick forest cover. The reserve spreads across roughly 223 hectares and combines different forest types at varying elevations.
The area became a protected reserve in 2006 under the Gävleborg County Administrative Board. The protected zone was enlarged nine years later to reach its current size of 223 hectares.
The woodland here provides homes for several woodpecker species, including the three-toed woodpecker. This variety of bird life draws nature observers to the area.
Reach the reserve by taking Route 84 west from Hudiksvall toward Ljusdal, then follow signs toward Näsviken and the entrance. The pathways are straightforward to locate and remain passable even in less ideal conditions.
The reserve brings together southern deciduous forests with maple and linden trees alongside northern coniferous forests typical of subalpine settings. This unusual combination exists because of the site's 462-meter elevation, creating a transition zone between two very different forest types.
