Aseaströmmen, Bronze sculpture in Stora Torget, Västerås, Sweden.
Aseaströmmen depicts eight bronze cyclists pedaling past a polished granite wall, with a dipper bird perched at the wall's end watching them. The figures are frozen in motion, as if departing on their daily journey.
Created between 1985 and 1989 by Bengt-Göran Broström, the sculpture honors workers who cycled daily to the Asea electrical factory. It captures an important chapter of Västerås history when factories shaped the rhythm of city life.
The cyclists wear clothing styles from the 1930s to the 1950s, showing the working culture that shaped Västerås during that era. This representation connects the past to today's cityscape and keeps alive the memory of the industrial boom.
The monument sits on Stora Torget and underwent restoration in 2021 after cracks appeared in the granite wall, then was reinstalled. The square itself is easily accessible and located in the heart of the city.
Local residents regularly dress the bronze cyclists with scarves and accessories, turning the sculpture into an interactive part of daily city life. This spontaneous decoration shifts with the seasons, giving the work fresh meaning.
