Brattforshedens krigsflygfält, Military aviation museum in Karlstad Municipality, Sweden
Brattforshedens krigsflygfält is an aviation museum in Karlstad Municipality with preserved World War II structures including concrete machine gun posts, camouflaged hangars, and an operational runway set in forest landscape. The site features multiple hiking trails and an observation tower offering panoramic views of the surroundings.
The airfield was built during 1939-1945 as one of about forty secret emergency landing sites constructed in Sweden and remains the only preserved example of such wartime installations. Its creation was part of Sweden's air defense strategy during a period when the nation prepared militarily for potential conflicts.
The site features original military buildings disguised as civilian structures, with hangars painted to resemble barns and barracks decorated with painted window designs.
Access is available through multiple hiking trails crossing the site at various difficulty levels. Advance reservations are needed to join guided tours or use the flight simulator experience.
The site employed a sophisticated camouflage system using different grass varieties and coal cinders arranged in patterns to appear as farmland when viewed from above. This innovative air defense approach remains one of the most interesting features of Swedish wartime preparations.
