Högbergsfältet, Nature reserve in Filipstad, Sweden
Högbergsfältet is a nature reserve near Filipstad with woodland, open grassland, and old mining pits across about 61 hectares of protected area. The landscape includes several habitats close together, from wooded sections to cleared fields near Lake Yngen.
Iron ore mining took place here until 1906, and the area witnessed Sweden's first miners' strike in 1869. The mining activities shaped the landscape, and traces of these operations remain visible in the old pits today.
The preserved landscape demonstrates the connection between traditional agriculture, mining heritage, and natural conservation through managed grazing and educational paths.
The reserve has several walking trails, including paths suitable for strollers, with parking areas near the entrance. The routes are well marked, allowing visitors to explore at their own pace.
The calcium-rich soil supports rare plant species, including specific orchid types and the fern murruta. Värmlandsfår sheep actively graze the grasslands, helping to maintain these distinctive habitats.
