Bystad Manor

Bystad Manor is a country estate complex centered on a two-story timber-built main house, located on the northern shore of Lake Sottern in Örebro Municipality. The property contains 17 structures including stables, warehouses, and other residential and work buildings that make up the complete agricultural ensemble.

The manor originated in the 14th century but took its current architectural form in 1729 under architect Mathias Spieler's direction. This redesign shaped the property's appearance for centuries and established it as a significant example of Scandinavian country house design.

The manor's interior walls showcase original 18th-century paintings applied directly to wooden panels, visible throughout the main rooms. These hand-painted decorations reflect the artistic tastes of the era and turn the spaces into a kind of walkable art collection.

The property sits directly on the northern shore of Lake Sottern, making it easy to orient yourself and explore the different buildings across the grounds. Since the structures are spread across the landscape, allow enough time to walk through and see all parts of the ensemble.

The grounds feature a late 16th-century storehouse that represents one of the few surviving examples of this building type in the region. This older structure shows how the property's practical needs were met across different periods of its history.
