Centralhotellet, Gävle, Historical hotel in Gävle, Sweden
Centralhotellet is a 19th-century building standing in Gävle's downtown core, with its main front facing Norra Centralgatan and displaying period architectural details. It contains 190 rooms today and houses Restaurant Skeppet, which reopened in 2020 after complete renovation.
The building was constructed in 1876 as Gävle rebuilt following the devastating city fire of 1869, becoming part of the new downtown. A major fire in 2005 destroyed the interior but firefighters from three counties protected the facade, which was then meticulously restored.
The hotel served as a social hub for generations, with different venues inside reflecting how entertainment and gathering places evolved in the city. Today it remains a meeting spot where locals and visitors experience Gävle's social life.
The hotel sits in downtown Gävle within easy reach of the city's main attractions and shops, making it a convenient base for exploring the area. The 2020 renovation combined modern amenities with the preserved historic character, making it comfortable for different types of visitors.
The building survived the 2005 fire thanks to exceptional teamwork from firefighters across three different regions, a rare instance of regional cooperation during crisis. Visitors today see the original facade while enjoying the completely updated interior, creating an unusual blend of old outside and new within.
