Folkungabrunnen, Historic fountain at Stora Torget, Linköping, Sweden
Folkungabrunnen is a sculptural fountain in Linköping's main square featuring a bronze figure of a rider on horseback crossing a stream as its central element. The composition sits within a diabase basin where water flows from rectangular vessels in cascading layers.
Sculptor Carl Milles created this work between 1924 and 1927, drawing inspiration from a novel about a medieval Swedish dynasty. The fountain later represented Sweden at the 1939 New York World's Fair before returning to its permanent home.
The basin displays relief carvings showing important moments and people from Östergötland's past. These detailed scenes tell regional stories that you can discover as you walk around the fountain.
This fountain sits at the center of Stora Torget and works well as a reference point when exploring Linköping's downtown area. It is easy to reach and visible from all directions across the square, making it simple to find your way around.
A replica of the central figure and basin reliefs stands at Millesgården museum on the island of Lidingö. This copy allows visitors to compare two versions of the artist's vision in different settings.
