Landsort 120-mm. Heavy Artillery Battery

Landsort is a coastal defense installation on an island near Stockholm that houses three 120-millimeter artillery guns mounted within protective domes. The facility was built directly into the natural rock formations of the island.

The battery was built in 1978 as part of Sweden's coastal defense system to protect shipping routes heading toward Stockholm. It played an important role in the nation's military strategy during the period of European political tensions.

This defense installation shows how Sweden protected its coasts during the Cold War era. Visitors can see today how soldiers worked under challenging conditions within the rock chambers.

Visiting requires advance booking through the relevant authority, and guided tours are offered only at certain times during the year. Access involves walking through rock passages, so wearing comfortable shoes and being prepared for cool underground conditions helps with the experience.

The installation was designed to operate independently for extended periods, equipped with systems capable of countering multiple types of threats including biological and chemical hazards. This level of self-sufficiency made it one of the most advanced defensive bunkers of its era.
