Fysingen, Nature reserve and birdwatching site in Stockholm County, Sweden
Fysingen is a nature reserve containing a lake, wetlands, and open water areas spanning about 184 hectares that draw nearly 100 bird species for nesting. An observation tower with wooden walkways passes through reeds and reaches two viewing decks where visitors can watch the birds and water.
The protected area was established in 1984 and includes Nordian's Mound, one of Uppland's largest burial grounds with more than 190 archaeological sites. This blend of nature protection and historical preservation shows how modern conservation efforts safeguard ancient remains.
The reserve blends natural landscapes with grazing practices, as Highland cattle and water buffalo shape the meadows through seasonal herding. This active land management gives the place its character and keeps the open spaces from becoming overgrown.
The observation tower and wooden walkways are wheelchair accessible and provide safe passage through the reed areas. Spring and autumn months offer the best birdwatching as many species pass through or nest during these seasons.
The northern shoveler, garganey, harrier, and Eurasian bittern are rare bird species that visitors can observe here. These uncommon arrivals draw dedicated watchers from across the region who time their visits to catch glimpses of these birds.
