Grytans skjutfält, Military shooting range in Östersund Municipality, Sweden
Grytans skjutfält is a military training ground located 15 kilometers south of Östersund with multiple zones dedicated to different types of weapons practice. The facility spreads across large grounds with specialized infrastructure designed to support various forms of artillery and firearms training.
The shooting field was established in 1893 and served as the primary training ground for the Norrland Artillery Regiment until 1997. Following that period, different military units took over management and the site remained active for Swedish armed forces training operations.
The site includes a camp area with 30 buildings spread over 40 hectares, constructed progressively since 1895 to accommodate military personnel and training activities.
The land contains unexploded ammunition from decades of military exercises, requiring careful management and restricted access in many areas. Visitors should be aware that large sections remain closed to the public due to these ongoing safety precautions.
An experimental tree planting project using hybrid aspens is underway on the grounds, designed to rehabilitate the land while avoiding disturbance to buried hazardous materials. This unusual combination of land restoration and safety management makes it a rare example of repurposing a former military training site.
