Östersund Municipality

Östersund Municipality is an administrative area in Jämtland that includes the city of Östersund at its center along with several rural villages and smaller settlements spread across the region. The territory contains lakes, forests, and open land that form a mix of urban and countryside environments typical of northern Sweden.

The municipality was established in 1971 when the city of Östersund merged with several surrounding rural villages to create a more efficient administrative structure. This consolidation was part of a larger Swedish reform movement that brought many similar mergers across the country.

The municipal government maintains strong democratic traditions with regular elections every four years, parallel to national voting schedules.

The area is best explored by car or bus since settlements and attractions are spread across the region and public transport is not available everywhere. The main city offers shops, restaurants, and services that can serve as a base for exploring the surrounding areas.

The territory combines urban and rural landscapes, with water bodies covering 292 square kilometers of its total area.
