Sankt Lars kyrkoruin, Medieval church ruin in Sigtuna Municipality, Sweden
Sankt Lars kyrkoruin is a church ruin situated along Prästgatan in Sigtuna, where primarily the western tower remains visible above ground. The remains reveal the layout of a medieval religious building that once stood as a key part of the town.
The church was built during Sweden's Christianization in the 1100s and served the community for several centuries. A fire in 1658 destroyed much of the structure following the Reformation and a period of different uses.
The site reflects the religious importance of medieval Sigtuna, which housed multiple places of worship during its peak. Today it shows how faith shaped the layout and development of this early Swedish town.
The ruin lies directly along the street and is accessible to visitors without charge, making it an easy stop while exploring Sigtuna. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and there are no facilities on-site.
Of all the church ruins in Sigtuna, this one preserves the smallest amount of original structural elements from its construction. This scarcity makes it a rare example of how fire in the early modern period could reduce medieval buildings to minimal remains.
