Ojnareskogen

Ojnareskogen is a protected forest in Gotland with extensive wetlands, natural springs, and Lake Bästeträsk at its heart. The area includes diverse landscapes ranging from open marshes to dense woodland sections.

The forest became the focus of environmental protests in 2012 when Nordkalk began limestone extraction operations between two Natura 2000 protected areas. This conflict raised awareness and led to stronger conservation efforts in the region.

The forest matters deeply to the local community as a source of natural water and refuge for wildlife. People here have built a strong connection to it through generations of living alongside its springs and wetlands.

The forest is accessible on foot with several trails winding through the wetlands and woodland areas. The best visiting season is from late spring through early autumn when paths are drier and easier to navigate.

The forest shelters more than 60 endangered species including a rare snake variety and orchids found nowhere else. These uncommon habitats draw nature observers and researchers interested in studying species that exist only here.
