Olshammarsgården, Historic manor in Askersund Municipality, Sweden
Olshammarsgården is a manor house situated near Lake Vättern, featuring a restored stucco facade and a traditional kitchen wing alongside the main structure. The property now operates as a community center and inn, accommodating visitors in five double rooms.
The manor was constructed in 1822 by Carl Rüttersköld as a private residence for a prominent local family. It later served as worker housing during the early 1900s before undergoing extensive restoration work in 1950.
This manor was the birthplace of writer Verner von Heidenstam, whose personal objects and furnishings are preserved in a dedicated room within the house. A doorframe inside bears pencil marks that record the heights of family members across different periods.
The manor sits on accessible grounds where visitors can explore both the outdoor spaces and the nearby lakeside area on foot. Interior rooms, including the writer's memorial space, can be viewed when visiting, though it is best to inquire about current visiting conditions.
Beside the manor stands Birgittakyrkan, a church built in the 1700s on a site linked to medieval religious history, where Saint Bridget is said to have built a chapel centuries earlier. This proximity allows visitors to experience two distinct historical periods in one location.
